New TRIO coordinator glad to be back at Gogebic

Tracey Maxwell

Foreign Correspondent

To say that Steve Lombardo appears to love his job would be an understatement. The new coordinator for TRIO always has an engaging smile whether it’s when he is welcoming students, staff, and visitors to the TRIOs Center or offering friendly assistance. He makes you want to love your work as much as he loves his.

Lombardo started his academic career right here at Gogebic Community College where he obtained his Associate’s Degree. Lombardo continued on to the University of Wisconsin-Superior where he majored in elementary education before earning his Master’s Degree in educational leadership at Viterbo University.

Steve Lombardo is the new coordinator of Student Support Services for TRIO.
In addition to his scholastic successes Lombardo has gained experience in the education field as a 5th grade teacher in South West Wisconsin.

When asked what brought him back to Gogebic, Lombardo smiled and said that it has always been a shared dream that he and his wife, Breanne, would return “home.”

Lombardo says that this position offered them the perfect opportunity to raise their two children, daughter, Laney, 2, and son Finnley, 2 months, close to family and friends.

Lombardo was eager to talk about the TRIO Program and how it offers the 160 qualified students many valuable services including advising, tutoring, and campus tours. To be eligible for the program students must qualify through low-income, a documented disability, or be first generation college students. Lombardo says the program offers resources our students would require to be successful at Gogebic and beyond.

Lombardo is kept busy in his role by a variety of responsibilities including organizing and facilitating the Lunch and Learn sessions, assisting students with career and life skills preparation, and providing support to office staff. His goal is to get students not only to graduate from Gogebic but to assist them in continuing on to a four year program.

Lombardo said that he was surprised by how many great things are being offered at Gogebic that weren’t available when he was a student, including, the TRIOs Program. Lombardo says that what he loves most about his job is being “able to work with a large and varied group people; from teachers and staff to students who range from 18 years to non-traditional.”

Lombardo also gives back to our community. When not inspiring the students at Gogebic to be all that they can be he finds time to coach Jayvee basketball at Hurley High school. Coaching isn’t new to Lombardo. In fact, Lombardo credits his post high school job as an assistant coach for the Hurley Football team as originally inspiring him to become a teacher.

Lombardo also keeps busy during his off hours. He says in his spare time he enjoys getting outside golfing with family and friends.

When I asked what advice he would offer students Lombardo said, “Always give 100% of your effort in whatever you do, whether school, career, or relationships.” It is obvious that Lombardo shows that he believes in this motto as he is leading by example.

Lombardo’s office is located in the TRIOS Center, Room T105, where you will find him Monday to Friday 7:30 to 4:00. You can also reach him at x. 339. I am sure you will recognize Lombardo’s office by his walls which are covered in football pennants including those from local colleges he has visited and, of course, an assortment from the Miami Dolphins.

Winterfest Coming to GCC

Brian Trepanier

Chieftain Staff

The winter season is upon us once again in the Ironwood area, but why lock yourself indoors and miss out on the fun during Winterfest.

The Gogebic Community College Student Senate is bringing some good old fashioned fun to the frozen North’s February; there will be lots of fun to be had during the week of February 6 to 10.

Although a schedule of events has not yet been devised, the Winterfest will include things like open skating, free tubing, snow sculpture competition between GCC programs for a $500 prize, and the Winterfest Ball to crown the Winterfest King and Queen.

Other events are still in the works but have yet to be announced. These events are not limited to just the college and will be open to the entire community.

We are also hoping to put together more community-oriented events like a winter poetry reading with hot chocolate and a bonfire, hayrides around campus for the kids, and maybe even an outdoor concert.

We are really hoping to see everyone out there and to share a little warmth in the cold.

Worth a read

Sue Rodell

Chieftain Staff

Chester Marcol, a former kicker for the Green Bay Packers from 1972-1980, was on GCC campus Wednesday, November 16,2011, speaking and promoting his new book, Alive and Kicking My Journey Through Football, Addiction and Life. Marcol to this day shares the record of 33 made field goals in one season with Ryan Longwell.

Even though I’m not much of a football fan, and never a Packer fan (I’m from the Chicago area –“Go Bears!”), I really enjoyed the history and the stories of players and coaches told by Marcol in this book. The real story for me though, is the miracle that is Chester Marcol. This is a story of life, its exhilarating moments and its darkest hours. This is the story of how one man went to places he never thought he’d go and his inspirational “formula” for his success today.

Chester Marcol came to the United States in 1965 and moved to a small town outside of Detroit, Michigan, with his mother, sister and two younger brothers when he was 15 years old. They left Communist Poland after his father had committed suicide. He could not speak nor understand a word of English when he began school at Imlay City High School. Marcol was a talented athlete and it was there his gift for kicking was discovered. Football helped ease his way into Midwest society

Marcol was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1972 and had an excellent career with them until an injury in 1975 led him to the next love of his life after football, narcotics, booze and needles. This is a painful read into the darkness of addiction. He lost everything and almost his life after a suicide attempt with battery acid, rat poison and vodka. The health consequences still affect him today.

This is not a self-help book but a story of his journey through painful adolescent years, success, the agony of addiction and then the light of recovery.

If you’ve ever experienced the holy hell of addiction or love someone who is an addict perhaps this book can give you hope if you’re looking for a way out or reaffirm your conviction and faith to continue your journey in recovery.

Chester Marcol, I wish you continued success and grace on your journey. I, too, “have been to hell and do not want to go back.” This is definitely worth a read.

A Merry GCC Christmas

Paige Wendt

Student Affairs Writer

I think it is safe to say that we college students are poor. I know all I spend my money on is gas for my car and occasionally Subway, but I still am always broke! Christmas is coming, and it’s always that time of year where people wish they had more money to spend on presents. I have realized though that the best gifts that make people happy the most are the homemade ones. Sure, it takes more time than picking up a gift box full of bath salts, but it is more personal, cheaper, and actually quite fun! You can get out your glue gun and make a paper wreath or something, but I have something more delicious in mind…Christmas cookies and pretzels! Everyone loves treats at Christmas time, so these are the perfect gifts. I buy Christmas decorated tins from the Dollar Store or Wal Mart (they range from $1-$2 each), line them with wax paper, and stuff them full of Christmas cookies. Here are a couple of my favorite (and easy!) Christmas cookie recipes.

Peanut Butter Blossoms (Recipe from allrecipes.com and Crisco, altered just a bit.)
Ingredients

• 1/2 cup CRISCO Butter Shortening
• 1/2 cup Creamy Peanut Butter
• 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 1 large egg
• 2 tablespoons milk
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• 1 3/4 cups All Purpose Flour
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• Sugar
• 48 foil-wrapped milk chocolate or dark chocolate Hershey’s kisses, unwrapped
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Cream together the shortening, peanut butter, brown sugar and 1/2 cup sugar. Add egg, milk and vanilla. Beat well. Stir together flour, baking soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture. Beat on low speed until stiff dough forms. Shape into 1-inch balls. Roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Top each cookie immediately with an unwrapped Kiss, pressing down firmly so that cookie cracks around edge. Remove from cookie sheets to cool.

Candy Cane Crisps (Recipe from Nestle)
Ingredients
• 1 ¼ cups Sugar Cookie Dough, softened
• ½ cup CRUshed candy canes
• 1 package of white chocolate chips

Directions
Preheat oven to 325. Incorporate candy cane pieces into dough. Refrigerate for 1 hour. Roll into ¼ inch balls. Place on foil lines, greased baking sheets. Bake 14-16 minutes. Let cool on wire racks. Drizzle with melted white chocolate. Besides the cookies, pretzels are fun, too (and even easier!). I buy the Christmas decorated, cellophane bags (you can get 12 for around $1), place the chocolate covered pretzels in them, and tie them shut with a red or green ribbon. Here are a few of my favorites!

Rolo Turtles (Recipe from grouprecipes.com)
Ingredients
• Package of Rolo candies
• Bag of small, circular pretzels
• Pecans, whole

Directions
Preheat oven to 350. Place pretzels on cookie sheet. Place Rolo candy in the middle of the pretzel. Bake for 3 minutes (or until Rolo is almost all melted). Immediately after taking out of oven, place pecan in the middle of the pretzel and chocolate. Let cool so chocolate hardens up again.

Chocolate Covered Pretzels
Ingredients
• Bag of large pretzel rods
• Package of chocolate chips or baking chocolate (dark, milk, or white chocolate)
• Any CRUshed up candy you like! My favorite combo is white chocolate and CRUshed up candy canes!

Directions
Melt chocolate. Dip pretzel rod in chocolate and roll in candy immediately after so the candy sticks. Let cool.

Canadian Corner: Writer Loving Deer Hunter’s Round Up

Tracey Maxwell

Foreign Correspondent

One of the many things I have grown to love in the UP is our annual tradition of listening to Deer Hunter’s Round Up. I value the hometown feel as local businesses call in the day’s results and share some of their hunting and personal stories.

This year has been especially fun as we have travelled to some of the places mentioned on the show. I have had my first “Sloppy Hoppy” and watched my first weigh in. Our timing was impeccable as we witnessed a sixteen year old hunter proudly watch as his beautiful 162 pound, ten point was hoisted on the scale. I also enjoy listening to the camaraderie as local camps jibe each other with ‘shout outs’! You don’t have to be an insider to get the references and challenges. Even the camp names can bring a laugh. I have been caught singing along to such hunting classics as “Thirty Point Buck.” What a wonderful lead into the holidays.

I can really feel how the hunting season brings families and friends together as they share great memories that will transcend the generations - and perhaps get themselves that prize buck.

I am in awe of the beauty of winter in the UP. The snow has already worked its magic by covering the ground and adorning branches. On one of our outings we saw a beautiful snowy owl take to flight from the road we were travelling. I am constantly in excited anticipation at what miracle of nature I will see each time I step outside our door.

Summer and I are still out on the roads navigating icy patches and sticking to tire tracks as we enjoy another training run. We are thrilled that she loves the snow and nature as much as we do. Snow also gives my canine running partner and me the advantage of seeing the tracks of the wildlife that inhabit the area.

Sunday we were happy to see a magnificent bald eagle circle above us as we ran snow covered trails. After a chilly weekend run we were welcomed home by the wonderful aroma of my boyfriend’s homemade chili. Honestly, does it get any better than this?

As I sit at our kitchen table – writing this piece - I am entertained by two squirrels chasing each other along snow covered limbs as a flock of geese fly overhead. And I am reminded, yet again, that we are truly lucky to be surrounded by such beauty. I can’t wait to get out for our run or perhaps snowshoeing will win out today. Whatever sport we choose to indulge in; I know this for sure. As the kid at the local gas station says, we are “living the dream!” At least my version of it.

Editorial: Parking, Grime and Gum

Parking etiquette

With the arrival of snow, bad parking and driving habits reach an all-time high at Gogebic Community College. People feel the need to double park and triple park. This wouldn’t be so horrible if there wasn’t already a limited amount of spaces for students and staff to park. No one wants to park in the farthest possible spot away from the school because fifteen other people felt they needed to take up two spaces in the closer spots. Learn to park and be considerate of your classmates and faculty.
Wipe your feet

Another gift that comes with snow fall is the slush and dirt that is spattered in every classroom and hallway of the college. It makes the school look dingy and the students sloppy. Much of this could be avoided if people would learn the talent of wiping their feet on the rugs as they enter the college. The rugs are there for this purpose. If everyone took a little extra time to do this, it would make everyone’s life a little easier and the college a little bit cleaner.
Gum in the elevators

Many of you at the college enjoy chewing gum but must learn that with such habits come certain decencies. If you find yourself in the elevator and your gum doesn’t taste as fresh, it is not appropriate to take it out of your germ filled mouth and stick it to the railing. The whole out of sight-out of mind thing does not apply in this case because there is always someone who accidently grabs the railing and ends up touching your disgusting aftermath. Wait until after you get off the elevator and throw it in the trash can. It’s not that hard.

Growing up in the Political Divide

Jennifer E. Terrell

News Editor

Every November brings a feeling of dread that refuses to go away unless I hide myself in my apartment and disconnect my television.

November is a time for the political vomit to be smeared across televisions, yards, and any other media possible. This wouldn’t be so bad if I had not grown up in my own personal political war. My mother is a Democrat while my father is a Republican. This caused many interesting moments in my childhood. My childhood home was the only house in the entire city that had both Democrat and Republican signs in troves decorating the lawn. I could have lived with this if it was just the signs but during election time my parents took political debating to a whole new level.

Every time I turned around my parents were arguing about who was the better candidate and what issues you should look at to decide on who you should vote for. Living in the middle of this battlefield did teach me to keep my mind open politically but it also made me appreciate the non-political season.

The day after the votes are counted and a final winner is announced is a day of much joy for me. I finally get some peace and at least one of my parents is happy.

Check out CRU at GCC

Hannah Borth

Special to the Chieftain

Water balloon fights and free coffee are only two of the past wonderful events that have been put on by CRU. CRU, short for Campus Crusade for Christ, is a college group run by students, for students.

They meet here on campus every Tuesday night at 7:30 in room T-23 and provide a night of free food, music, fellowship, games and a short message.

This group is also an opportunity to meet other students and enjoy fellowship during the week.

The group has been on Campus for the past two semesters and have hosted many events, such as; a water balloon fight, glow stick capture the flag, free coffee and hosted nights at the gym.

This group is also an opportunity to meet other students and enjoy fellowship during the week.

Nights on Tuesday starts off with a group game that changes week to week! Everything from speed scrabble, spoons, Pictionary, hitting each other with swimming noodles, and sometimes swing dancing.

After the game, there is a time of singing, then a short biblical message with time for discussion and fellowship with free food afterwards. Every week has its own unique game, snack and topic of study

During the semester, CRU strives to provide special events for students to participate in and have some fun! Fliers are put up when these events come up to inform the students of when, where and what it is.

This being the second semester CRU has been at GCC, it has grown and continues to provide an outlet of fun, fellowship and a safe place to ask spiritual questions and grow.

Even if students don’t have a religious background they are encouraged to come and bring questions, insight or thoughts to CRU. Everyone is welcome.

The students that lead and run CRU dedicate time and effort into trying to provide a safe, fun environment for getting together as students and not only grow in the knowledge of God, but to bring to campus something different and awesome.

As the end of the semester is soon coming to an end, CRU will be doing one more big event as a winter break kickoff!

As it is still being finalized, information will be provided by the fliers put up around campus, so please be keeping your eyes open for upcoming events!

CRU is looking forward to being on campus next semester as well; the leadership team is excited to see how God will work on campus in the upcoming years!

There is a Facebook group called “GCC Campus Crusade for Christ” if you would like to join for some more information.

If you have more questions please email CRU at gogebicCRU@gmail.com

Movie Review: True Romance

Sheena Trepanier

Graphics Editor

An early Quentin Tarantino film, released in 1993, that by first glance you can’t tell if its shoot-em up, romance, or comedy. It ended up being all those things and more. When Clarence (Christian Slater) meets Alabama (Patricia Arquette) it’s flash fire love and a trip to the altar, followed by gun fire, road trips, drug lords, and lots of death!

Slater and Arquette have a sweet romantic chemistry that isn’t seen much in movies anymore and leave you thinking their crazy love could be real.

A cast featuring many big names like; Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, and Samuel L. Jackson who despite their small roles make their characters dynamic parts of the story.

This movie turns out to be more than one expects in so many good ways. As long as gun fire and some violence is your thing then this movie is a must see.

You won’t come away disappointed and in the end you’ll have one more movie to add to your favorites.
